Cancer Information Available in 13 Asian/Pacific Islander Languages
Are you looking for cancer education materials for patients who speak Asian and Pacific Islander (API) languages such as Hmong, Vietnamese, Korean, Samoan and Tongan? If so, you’re not alone. In the first six months since it was launched, the Asian Pacific Islander Cancer Education Materials (APICEM) Web portal--the nation’s first centralized Web-based resource for authoritative cancer information materials in API languages--drew an impressive 18,523 visitors.
APICEM, located at www.aancart.org/apicem and at www.cancer.org/apicem, is a joint project of the Asian American Network for Cancer Awareness Research and Training and the American Cancer Society, with funding from the National Cancer Institute. The Web portal tool lets health care providers search for and retrieve prescreened, culturally and linguistically competent cancer information materials in 13 languages, including (besides those mentioned above) Chamorro, Chinese, Chuukese, Khmer, Kosraean, Marshallese, Thai and Yapese. APICEM also provides links to English-language materials culturally tailored to Native Hawaiian populations. More languages and materials will be added as the site matures.
