Discrimination-Racial Targeting in Nursing School

At the school that I currently attend, I have had multiple encounters of discrimination/racial targetting from faculty members. I have made previous attempts to share the information with the Dean of the program but have been brushed off with a "it seemed to have worked out" type of answer...in the most recent and largest form of racial discrimination, I reported it to our schools multicultural director, and who shared it with the dean/associate dean of the program. The response was that I could file harrassment against that instructor. I thought what would that do other than add to the bad reputation that I have due to the continuous attempts of trying to fight for equality and defend myself from descrimination. To make matters worse the descrimination doesn't just stop with faculty, I've actually heard a handful of the students making racist comments as well. At this point i don't plan on taking further action while I am still in the program but I do want to be heard and for the school to realize it is not OKAY. If anyone has any ideas on who I should be contacting with this concern that would be helpful.

Racial targeting

I know exactly what you are going through. My experience in nursing school had been the same. Even to the extent of an instructor lying about my performance and blatant sabatoge. Unfortunately there is nothing you can do. The dean will avoid the issue as will all other faculty members. This kind of behavior we all know occurs, however those involved will never admit it. I would say that if the person in charge is a person of color you have a chance of something being done about it, if not- forget it. Whites typically do not even admit it discrimination exists so your just wasting your time. In addition, the topic usually makes them feel uncomfortable (I guess because they are the most common offenders). The best of luck to you.

racial targeting

Unfortunately this is a problem that does not stop in the nursing school but follows a minority throughout his/her career for as long as she/he remains a minority.
An instructor had the guts to issue this fair warning to all the "minorities in the class" incase the joke he was going to share would be "offensive" to the "minorities". The joke was about a patient who would not heed his doctor's advice and insisted that he was doing very well contrary to the photos that were presented of him, looking sick, emmaciated and slumped over. This is a joke that anyone in the healthcare field would understand! If anything the minority in this case would have been someone outside the healthcare realm. If this is not discrimination, then what is it?

Social Work

What a sad, but all too common situation. I was a Manager in a mental health field. My background was Social Worker and over some years became a Manager of a large institution. Oh my eyes were opened. Gone was the rose colored glasses that I thought social work would provide me. My colleagues were just terrible. For every success I achieve in managing people and our clients success as a result, my direct colleagues became my competitors. So in the school system hearing this is not a surprise. What we do about it. I really don’t have the answers.

.....

It's been a while since I've been on here. In response to the above comments, I do wish there was something that can be done. I feel like whenever people get national attention they begin to make changes. While a portion of my goodness has been lost in school as a result of being treated poorly in school, I feel like my passion to find a way to bring awareness of this issue to the general public has replaced what I lost. For instance if a large organization would feature an article of multiple student's experiences similar to ours and do so using the names of the schools as part of the individuals name/credentials, i.e. Sandy XXXX BSN Boring College it would be a good way to say hey you're rear is hanging out. I did at some point send out an anonymous email (because the incidents, along with other factors had held me back from graduating when I was suppose to, I was not about to take the risk of throwing all my money down the toilet) to the accrediting companies for my school regarding the matter, and whether it was genuine or not, i did get what seem like good responses in where I can take this concern to. I also think it would be good to do a survey of minority students within the nursing programs and see what the outcome is. We had one company who did a survey of the testing styles in our nursing program; it failed for lack of cultural competency. Examples of some of the things I have encountered...I the Dean of Academic Advising telling me that if I couldn't take test,I couldn't be a nurse...I was 10 minutes late to praxis one day...I had an enraged driver try to take me out...no excuses, i get it it's unacceptable, the consequence (writing a paper of a research article) was only applied to my occurrence, not to the 2-4 Caucasian students who where 15 minutes late EVERY DAY!...the clinical instructor even said "granted I realize XXXX has been late every day"...i said nothing I completed the assignment and turned it in. These are a couple examples but so much more It is OVERWHELMING. the thing that annoys me is that I watched my school continue to bring in minority students, claiming that they need to diversify their campus, however the majority if not all (at least within the past couple of years) of nursing students who do not make it are minorities. these students complain of the same thing...and yet are ignored. It makes me want to scream out, you can not claim to want to increase diversity in your program and on your campus when you don't address any other supportive resources for them and they end up dropping out or failing out of the program. I want to shout from the top of a building to every minority in our community....do not attend this school. I know for some it's a matter of getting into nursing school but coming from someone who felt that way initially I would not trade in the person I was going into the program for the negative person I became coming out. hind sight is 20/20 right? my goal to become a part of an organization within my community and help students get to know the reality of nursing school as a minority. To share my experiences including the school I attended and to help them make better decisions, but also to get through and succeed! My negativity had increased towards this school. PS if anyone knows how I can get an article published let me know...I am already thinking of starting to collect the research data.

True

Something has to be done about this. I thought this was just my school, but I see it's happening all over. At my school there is underground racism. No one sees it but those who are diverse. The nursing program attracts diversity and no diversity has graduated from the nursing program at my school yet. I had an incident with a professor in class with the use of the N word and I had to address that. That issue brought about other issues within the program and just within my school. Now in my nursing class there are 25 students, but two of us are diverse. We stand out. One of the diverse students in the class above mines was treated unfairly. She was a top student, but yet her clinical instructor failed her and she was in her senior year. That makes me upset. Now I'm trying my best to press toward the goal. And get this it's a Christian school. SMH. You would have thought God and His ppl know no color right?
