Diversity Information Session @ University of Maryland SON

I am preparing to apply to CRNA programs. So, like many, I frequently surf the net to research nurse anesthesia schools and opportunites for sRNA prospects. A couple of months ago, a friend directed me to diversitycrna.org. It was there that I found a small blurb regarding a Diversity in Nurse Anesthesia Mentorship Program Information Session that would be held at the University of Maryland School of Nursing. Over the weekend, I attended that session. All I can say is that I am so glad I made the commitment to invest in myself and attend this session.

Before the session started, Ms. Lena Gould (Founder of the Diversity in Nurse Anesthesia Program) found me sitting in the corner with a few other attendees. She introduced herself and greeted me with a hug. The session started. We were able to hear from some pretty dynamic speakers. The main speaker was Steve Alves, CRNA, PhD (AANA Vice President). John Bing, CRNA, Lou Heindel, CRNA, DNP, Mikole Burke- Anderson, Esq. and Julia Feliciana, CRNA were a few additional panelists. There were so many pearls of wisdom given that I have yet to find on the web. There was an sRNA panel. We also heard from many other CRNAs (too many to name). I believe so many people took time out of their busy schedules because they value the profession and really want to ensure the profession is enriched with the best.

During lunch, the speakers and panelists mixed and mingled with the attendees. I used this opportunity to pick the brains of three sRNAs sitting at my table. I left the session with practical information and a few new contacts and supporters of my dream. We were given a DVD that briefly reviewed anesthesia machine checks, the ventilator, advanced airway techniquies, frequently used meds, spinal blocks, etc. I have watched it a few times already. I am really energized and even more determined to make my dream happen.

Lastly, I want to emphasize how thankful I am to Ms. Lena Gould for not only having the vision of a more diverse CRNA profession, but for doing what is needed so that one day, the vision will come to pass.
