Response to Columbia and UPenn SRNAs/ Lena Gould, CRNA, MSN

Hello Future Nurse Anesthesia Student,

I am a former Chief Nurse Anesthetist, Clinical Coordinator of five nurse anesthesia programs, doctoral student, and the proud founder of the Diversity in Nurse Anesthesia Mentorship Program. I am glad you are inquiring about these two fine Nurse Anesthesia Programs. I hope you have visited Columbia University and the University of Pennsylvania Nurse Anesthesia Program websites and made yourself familiar of their admission requirements, curriculum, clinical expectations and open house information.

The Diversity in Nurse Anesthesia Mentorship Program host Diversity CRNA Information Session & Airway Workshops across the country. Invited panelists are Nurse Anesthesia Program Directors, predominantly minority CRNAs and Nurse Anesthesia Students (SRNAs). If you elect to attend this comprehensive session, you will learn about the true rigors of the program, admission process, interviewing etiquette, clinical preparation, didactic courses, financial considerations, doctoral opportunities, and more! You will receive a full copy of the new anesthesia video of minority CRNAs and SRNAs reviewing the anesthesia machine and related equipment with extended interviews! Nursing students and Registered Nurses from across the country who are seriously considering applying to a nurse anesthesia program or was recently accepted into a program will be more informed and competitive as a result of attending the sessions.

In 2012, there are three Diversity CRNA Information Sessions scheduled at Pennsylvania (Drexel University), California (Samuel Merritt Unviersity) and North Carolina (Duke University). Our first scheduled event will be held at Drexel University (March 31st). You will meet four Nurse Anesthesia Program Directors from Drexel University, University of Pennsylvania, University of Maryland, and the University of New England. Network with CRNAs and SRNAs from various programs including the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia University. You can register and book your hotel online by visiting www.diversitycrna.org. On the homepage of the website, my article, Guide to CRNA Admission should be read prior to submitting any applications. The article can also be located in the Minority Nurse Magazine website under Featured Articles. This is a great time to start researching about nurse anesthesia programs and the profession itself. Further, visit our professional association website, www.aana.com and on the left hand side of the site, click on Student Photographs, then click on Diversity in Nurse Anesthesia Mentorship Program.

Response to Columbia and UPenn SRNA students

I am not an SRNA (yet) but I did attend the Diversity in Nurse Anesthesia Information Session Luncheon and Airway Workshop this past October. It was hosted by University of Penn and they did a fine job of hosting. The faculty was very enthusiastic and interactive with all of the participants of the session; their students even helped out with the airway workshop, which took a day away from their own studies. Faculty was honest about the rigors of their program; still, it seemed to me that their program is very well put together. Great choice for you to be considering.
